Robert P. Roper '64

Former Woodberry trustee Robert “Bob” Roper, Jr. received his B.A. from Hampden-Sydney College in 1968. He worked in real estate development before joining Philip Morris Companies, Inc. in 1974. He served in the marketing department in several capacities rising to Group Director of Tobacco Brand Management in 1984. In 1987 he transferred to Philip Morris International and moved to Tokyo, Japan where he served  as President of Philip Morris Japan. In 1993 he returned to Philip Morris World Headquarters in New York and served as Vice-President of Marketing, Philip Morris International. Upon his retirement from Philip Morris, he returned to his home state of Virginia and established a consulting practice focused on American companies conducting business in Japan and Japanese companies conducting business in the United States. He has served his community as Chairman of the Mathews Community Foundation and Chairman of the Advisory Council of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science. He also served on the Virginia Institute of Marine Science Foundation Board. He served on the Woodberry Forest Board of Trustees from 2005 to 2014, and chaired the search committee for our current headmaster, Byron Hulsey. He is married to Kathleen “Kathy” Dunn Roper and has two children — Robert ’86 and Sterling.
